Tonight was a good night. We had a moderately small crowd, but that was okay. We kind of like that sometimes.

We had a TV screen on stage and during the first set we showed an Anime series called Esca Flowne. The first set started off with "Vacation to Oblivion" followed by "Prince Caspian" but this time, instead of going into "Cake" we blasted "Piper" out there. Whew! That was risky. We revived an old sing along that we used to do back in the day...yeah, like two months ago. Woo-Hoo!

And then for a special guest spot, we had Bruce Likness come up and do vocals on the third slot in the "Cacophany Trilogy". He sang "Jesus is Lord" in his best hard-core voice. Hard. Core. to the Bone. Bruce.

Crystal was finally at a show to hear the song that was written for her answering machine. It was good that she finally heard it.

During the break, we switched Esca Flowne with Transformers: the Movie for the second set.

We played the Radiskull's song for PJ and a brand new version of JCM's "Jack and Diane". Ah yes, the Macho Man Mix. Dustin sang "Oh yeeah" just like Macho Man Randy Savage and fun was had by all.

Then on the next song, we definitely had some Pink Floyd/Wizard of Oz-ish stuff going on. We debuted a brand new song called "Like a Dream". It's kind of a somber tune, very dreamlike in nature and even sad and angst filled at times. While we played it, the television screen showed the dramatic and mournful death of Optimus Prime. Cosmic coincidences don't happen every day.

Dustin dedicated "Rich & Poor" to Unicron and after that, a few in the crowd chanted, "Hat, hat, hat." It was weird. Then we played our peppier dancier tunes. Our most devoted fans found their boogie and rose to their feet and danced the night away. THANKS, JUNEBUGGERS!!!

Tonight is a long story, I guess. First off, Mark Hilstrom from somewhere in Wisconsin was booked to play. He didn't show up. He didn't call, he didn't write, he made no contact, he just didn't show up. Fed By Doris was supposed to open for him, so they just figured that Fed By Doris would be the openers and the headliners. That was fine. Jer left at about 8:30 to get something to eat. Then 9:30 rolled around and where was Jer? Dan and Tony K. ran down to the flame where Jer and Ky and Tony J. and Sharon were. They hadn't even received their meal yet and it turned out Jer had almost completely lost his voice. So it would be almost impossible to do a real FBD show.

Dan asked if Junebug would like to play an acoustic set since we were all there, so what we decided was that Anthony would do some solo work and Tony would do some solo work and that Tony and Dan would do a few FBD tunes.

Anthony began with a quaint little tune, "My Dad". On a whim, Dustin told Tony, "Let's go up." So they did and played the first set under the name "Shaggy Bandits." The set included "It's Been a Long Time" which appears on The Big Orange Van, Dead Beat Duck, which appears on Anthony's Rebel Without a Car, and Jumpstart My Rocket which will be on the new Junebug album.

Next was Tony with some stuff from his solo album, Drama Queen. Dustin joined in on drums on "If I Could Cook" and moved to bass for the rest of the set. This set included some of Tony's originals, some "rare" Junebug songs and a few covers and teases.

Dan got a chance to come on up and we played Da Bomb with Bruce on vocals and the third set of the night was underway. Dan named this group "The Stone Cold Fobstoppersons." I'm a little fuzzy on how things went for this set because Tony's camcorder stopped and I can't remember such things very well. I remember that at one point Dan, Dustin, and Tony were talking about various celebrities they'd met; the Smashing Pumpkins, Mary-Ann from Gilligan, the guy that wrote the "That Thing You Do" song from that movie, and Bruce chimed in saying he's met Mickey Mouse.

Peanut Butter was pretty fun too. Dan had Anthony take a mic into the audience Oprah style and have audience members sing verses.

Bruce requested Fargo Gypsy Girl and we said we'd play it if he sang it. So we did. And he did. He actually knows the song too. That's pretty cool.

We ended up playing more and more stuff till about 1:00am and then Dan closed the coffee house and everyone left. But we still played till about 1:40 just to amuse ourselves.

For the second portion of the Big Gypsy Day Party, we all moved inside the coffee house and had indoor music. Starting off with The Deceased, we moved on to a couple songs by Plaid Moon, followed by December Stars, who then gave the stage to Junebug to finish the night.

Junebug took the stage at about 11:45pm expecting to play about thirty minutes. It ended up being a bit longer than that, which is a good thing. The crowd were very much into it. It seems like they enjoyed this one more than the outdoor set a couple hours previous.

The normal Junebug show was there, starting with Piper, going nuts with the Cacophany Trilogy and laughing our way through Downtown Liquor Store. But then something amazing happened. At the beginning of Found My Boogie, Anthony said, "Get up," and everybody lept to their feet in an instant. Many times, it's taken a few tries and people tend to be a little inhibited. Not tonight. There were no butts in the seats. Everyone found their boogie and they wanted more. We skewed from the setlist to add Cupid, Bad MammaJamma, and Modern Day Fairy Tales so as to let our wonderful crowd feel the waves of the Junebug flow.

We brought the mood down a little bit with Copenhagen, but the energy never left. This crowd was fantastic!

Thank you to Amy Heidenreich for videotaping us, thanks to Aaron Clarksean for letting Tony use his kickdrum pedal, thanks to Kate and Carissa for driving a hundred miles to see us, and thanks to EVERYONE who cheered and danced and made us feel like rock stars.

It was a great night.

9/30/00 - Red Rooster Sidewalk - Aberdeen, S.D.

Tonight was supposed to be the big show. There was supposed to be a big ol' stage set up in the street and the street was to be blocked off and there was to be a huge block party. Since someone failed to meet their responsibilities (not Dan Cleberg who did everything expected of him), the street didn't get reserved and we didn't have a big ol' stage. But that didn't stop the party from happening!

There was a miniature stage outside set up against the Red Rooster's window that served as Tony's drum platform and Dustin and Anthony stood on the sidewalk below. The parking places immediately in front of the coffee house were blocked off and chairs and tables were set up for the many guests of the establishment. It was a very nice atmosphere and the weather was beautiful. It was perfect accomodation for an outdoor rock show.

Rob Drapeaux started off the evening with his acoustic flamenco work. Clown was next with an acoustic set of their own. December Stars finished closely behind, with Junebug bringing up the rear.

We played an assortment of "gems" to entertain and to entice the crowd into our show later that night.

The crowd was into it and a few fans made up signs that they waved at the band as they yelled "We love Junebug!" That boosted our egos for sure. There was great response and support from this great audience made up of Junebuggers, big fans, and Junebug newbies. It was a fun show. Dan Cleberg sat in on bass tonight. That's always fun. First and foremost, a HUGE thank you goes out to everyone who came out to the show and stuck around for the whole thing. It was a pretty long show and we can't tell you how much your support means to us.

Another HUGE bunch of thanks goes to Junebugger Dan, who is not only one of our biggest fans, but tonight was so kind as to man the door and the merchandise table. You are my rock star. You are my kind of guy. You rock a mountain lion's @$$. Seriously.

Junebug's opening band, Fed By Doris, had to cancel tonight. One of the members lives in Mobridge, SD and couldn't make it to Aberdeen. But luckily, Will Brown was here to save the day. He played some solo acoustic stuff that was really very good. We hope to maybe play with him again.

Dan Cleberg was on hand tonight to play bass with us on some tunes. It was nice to have some added instrumentation live.

According to PJ, the set tonight was 135 minutes without the intermission. That's a record for us. It beats our previous longest show by 45 minutes. Coolness.

We played Da Bomb by Fed By Doris tonight. It was unfortunate that the band couldn't play themselves. However, their drummer and bassist were present and they both happened to be playing with Junebug tonight. So Junebug with Dan Cleberg ripped up kind of a different version of the song with Dan on the vocals since Jer wasn't there, Tony on supporting vocals, and Dustin and Anthony on guitars. It was a fun one, that's for sure.

One thing that made this show different was that at the end, we kept playing beyond the setlist. Cupid was intended to be the last tune, but people wanted to hear more. So we played what we've got of a work-in-progress tentatively called Everything Seems Like a Dream. We then proceeded to play Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay by Otis Redding and then Peej requested Happy Book of Smiles. And as if that wasn't enough, Dustin, Will, and Tony jammed for about 15 minutes on some blues impromptu.

We decided tonight that the Official Junebug Groupies are now called the Official Junebuggers.

It was a fun night.

We had actually intended for tonight to be a practice. But when some of our friends showed up to visit, it turned into a mini show in which we played "rarities" and took requests.

It was a fun jam session. We hope to do more things like this. That's all. We had a little show tonight. It started at about 1 am.

If Dan had known about it, he'd have been there lickety split, no $#!+.

Mediocrity (Bud Hess) opened tonight's show with some great one-man acoustic stuff and was assisted by Broc Johnson of DosBoot on drums on a few tunes. Also, joining Mediocrity on one tune were Dustin and Tony from Junebug. They performed an almost impromptu version of the Smashing Pumpkins' "Rhinoceros." Following Mediocrity were the Kamikaze Snowmen (Terry Brown, Josh Trumbo, Paul Tebben) with a great set of comic music that kept the audience up.

Junebug was next. Anthony thanked the first bands for letting us close for them. We opened with "In the Flesh?", the rousing opener from Pink Floyd's The Wall. I (tony) was on vocals and the song didn't really go so well. Admittedly, we're new at this, but it seems we're probably better at playing our own tunes.

After "Piper," Anthony was heard saying, "That was some down home good music." Then in a fit of passion he attempted to swear, but instead spit out the words "doll gurn" and stopped himself. Dustin asked, did you say "Dolph Lundren?" I then added a "Todd Rundgren?" to the mix.

Two brand new, never before heard songs were debuted tonight; "Bumblebee" and "Found My Boogie."

There was a whole lot of dancin' goin' on tonight too. Members of the crowd found their boogie and danced the night away on select tunes and especially at the end with an extended dance version of "Cupid."

There were about 50 people in attendence and they all stayed through the storm to see the show. There were severe thunderstorm warnings and the tornado siren even went off. But it was all cool. The only thunder in the Red Rooster was caused by the BANDS! Yeah, you got it.

Also notable tonight was my (tony's) new (used) drum set. It's an old Apollo kit and it's got an orange sparkle finish.

Fun was had by all tonight and we look forward to our next show at the Rooster.
